How do I choose a Point Style 4 needle bevel angle?

The most common bevel angles are 12°, 30°, and 45°. A standard Point Style 4 needle features a default bevel angle of 12°, which is the sharpest needle we offer. For applications which require a sharp needle with a shorter bevel length, a 30° or 45° bevel would be recommended. As the bevel angle increases, the bevel length decreases, and the point becomes less sharp.

Hamilton Point Style 4 at a 12° bevel is recommended for animal injections as the sharpest needle possible is often required. For applications where injection site depth is critical or the target is small, a 30° or 45° bevel is suggested.

I have a syringe, which needle do I need?

If you already have a syringe and need a Hamilton needle, you can determine the appropriate needle if you know one of the following: 1) the glass syringe termination; 2) the glass syringe part number; or whether you are dealing with a common plastic syringe. Click the heading to learn more.

What do I need to consider when using a 34 gauge needle?

For some applications the smaller size is a real advantage but has inherent complications. 34 gauge tubing requires special cutting tools to ensure the tubing is not crimped shut. Due to this limitation the needles are only available in restricted lengths and point styles. The small inner diameter (ID) results in a needle more prone to clogging, and cleaning wires are not available for this size.

Why is there a sticky substance in my syringe/needle?

If your sample contains protein, it is not recommended to rinse your syringe/needle with an ethanol-based solution as this often creates a sticky residue which is difficult to remove. Please see the care and use guide for additional cleaning recommendations.

The needle gauge refers to the outer diameter of the needle. The larger the gauge, the smaller the outer diameter of the needle. The smaller the gauge, the larger the outer diameter of the needle. For example, a 10 gauge needle has an outer diameter of 3.4 mm, whereas a 34 gauge needle has an outer diameter of 0.16 mm.

Dead volume is defined as the volume of solution that remains in the needle after an injection. Many methods require or would benefit from a fluid path with as little dead volume as possible. This is because the fluid being transferred is of high value and it would be desirable to limit any loss.
