How It's Used

Closed-Loop Automation in Action

The VENUS Python SDK enables scientists to build experiments that observe their own results and adapt automatically — reading run data, adjusting protocol parameters, and re-executing without manual intervention. Connect to your LIMS or analysis tools to close the loop between instrument and insight.

VENUS Python SDK

Extend VENUS with Python

The VENUS Python SDK gives scientists and engineers direct access to Hamilton liquid handler controls through a clean Python interface. Author protocols as Python scripts, connect to data pipelines and LIMS, build autonomous closed-loop experiments, and integrate with AI agents — all using the tools your team is familiar with.

Open, Portable Formats

Instrument configuration, including deck layouts, labware definitions, and liquid classes, is stored in open Python and JSON formats so protocols can be version-controlled, shared, and managed through Git.

Real-Time Process Intelligence

Every pipetting command returns TADM aspiration and dispense data in JSON  supporting real-time quality monitoring, analysis, and integration with downstream workflows.

Requires VENUS 6.6 or greater and Python 3.11+.

Featured Technologies
  • Liquid Handling Technology
    Anti-Droplet Control (ADC)

    For Drip-Free Pipetting

Pressure sensors on Hamilton’s pipetting channels continuously detect variations. Any changes are immediately compensated for by dosing drive movements to prevent droplet formation. Essential for high-precision and accuracy when pipetting volatile liquids like ethanol and acetonitrile.

  • Liquid Handling Technology
    MAD - Monitored Air Displacement

    For Unmatched Reliability

MAD monitors the air displacement in each pipetting channel of a Hamilton automated liquid handler. During liquid aspiration steps, this non-contact technology immediately identifies clots, empty wells, or other aspiration issues. It also delivers a confirmation of successful aspiration in each pipetting channel of a Hamilton automated liquid handler.

  • Liquid Handling Technology
TADM – Total Aspiration & Dispense Monitoring

    For Real-Time Pipetting Accuracy

During aspirate and dispense steps, TADM monitors real-time pressure changes in each Hamilton liquid handler pipetting channel. Results are compared against expected values to expose anomalies like bubbles and insufficient volumes. Sample transfers are verified with a digital audit trail.

  • Pipetting Technology
    CO-RE II Tip/Tool Attachment

The Key to Liquid Handling Workflow Excellence

The new CO-RE II technology assures more precise tip alignment, minimizing the risk of collisions. Also, tip coupling is faster which boosts productivity. Besides tips, a wide range of Hamilton tools are applicable with CO-RE II.

  • Pipetting Technology
    Capacitive Liquid Level Detection

    For Accurate Pipetting

Channels are equipped with capacitance sensors that detect the liquid level through capacitive Liquid Level Detection (cLLD). Hamilton’s black conductive CO-RE tips facilitate capacitance sensing with the conductivity properties tailored for the capacitive liquids.

Author, share, and reuse liquid handling protocols in Python, a widely used language for scientific computing with access to extensive open-source libraries.

Store all instrument configuration in open, Git-friendly formats — enabling full change tracking, rollback, and audit trails for compliance.

Every pipetting command returns TADM aspiration and dispense data in JSON for real-time quality monitoring and integration with analysis pipelines.

Compatible with existing STAR, STAR V, VANTAGE, and new Fluid Motion systems, the SDK supports Hamilton pipetting technologies including ADC, MAD, TADM, CO-RE tools, liquid level detection, and DeckWatch cameras

Six Ways to Automate More

The VENUS Python SDK exposes the full power of Hamilton liquid handlers through clean, Pythonic APIs, — from simple pipetting protocols to fully autonomous closed-loop experiments.

1

Open File Formats

Store method scripts, labware definitions, liquid classes, and deck layouts in open, portable formats to support interoperability and version control across your workflow.

2

Git Version Control

Track every parameter change, roll back to any prior protocol state, and maintain a full compliance audit trail — treating your liquid handling protocols like software.

3

Agentic & AI-Ready

AI agents can generate, execute, and refine protocols using the SDK’s agent-ready API documentation, supporting autonomous, closed-loop experimental workflows.

4

Real-Time TADM Data

Every pipetting command returns aspiration and dispense pressure curves in structured JSON, giving Python workflows real-time visibility into instrument performance.

5

Dynamic Configuration

Create and modify deck layouts, labware, and liquid classes programmatically at runtime so instrument setup can adapt as workflows evolve.

6

Structured Error Handling

Receive errors as structured JSON with code, description, and available recovery options. Send recovery actions or trigger operator dialogs directly from Python.

Support your entire workflow with Hamilton's integrated products.

The VENUS Python SDK connects your Hamilton liquid handler to the tools and systems  that support modern laboratory workflows, from data management and version control to AI frameworks and the VENUS platform.

LIMS & Data Pipelines

Connect liquid handling runs directly to your LIMS, databases, and monitoring dashboards for seamless data capture and traceability.

Git & Version Control

Store and manage all protocol files in Git repositories — enabling team collaboration, change tracking, and full compliance audit trails.

AI Agents & LLMs

Integrate with AI and LLM frameworks to enable autonomous protocol generation, iterative refinement, and closed-loop experimentation.

VENUS REST API

Built on the VENUS REST API and requiring VENUS 6.6 or greater, the SDK uses clean JSON over HTTP for interoperability with a wide range of languages, frameworks, and tools.
