Excellent retention for polar compounds

The PRP Z2 is an innovative addition to the well-known PRP resin family. Its highly cross-linked PS-DVB backbone provides exceptional structural rigidity, enabling outstanding performance with all common chromatographic eluents, including highly alkaline and strongly acidic mobile phases. This stability supports operation across the full pH range for the isolation of virtually any analyte.

PRP Z2 was specifically engineered to maximize polar retention through a combination of deeper pores, higher surface area, and embedded polar moieties. These features improve retention and selectivity for highly polar and cationic analytes. We have observed improved retention for the following classes of compounds: polar analytes such as organic acids; proteins, oligonucleotides, and peptides; and other biological molecules.

Oligonucleotide Separation

PRP‑Z2 was specifically engineered to better support the separation of large biomolecules—especially oligonucleotides—than some of Hamilton’s existing stationary phases, such as PRP‑C18 or PRP‑1. The performance gains are enabled by the following particle attributes:

  • Optimized pore size (160 Å): Enables efficient pore access for both small and large molecules.
  • Expanded pore volume (0.9 cm³/g): Provides sufficient pore space for larger molecules to penetrate deeper into the stationary phase, improving interaction and retention.
  • High surface area (624 m²/g): Increased surface roughness promotes stronger analyte–surface interactions, resulting in higher resolution and greater binding capacity.
  • Inherently hydrophobic PS–DVB surface: Supports strong interactions with ion-paired oligonucleotides, reducing or eliminating the need for elevated salt concentrations in the mobile phase.
  • Thermal and chemical robustness: Improves method durability and extends column lifetime.
