Reliable and fast isolation of nucleic acids from variable samples is crucial for molecular analysis by PCR, RT-PCR, sequencing, arrays and other methods.

Automated magnetic beads-based nucleic acid extraction can reduce operator exposure to hazardous materials, such as phenol or chloroform, and improve the consistency and accuracy of results.

Hamilton Company provides flexible workstations that can automate protocols with a variety of different chemistries (AGOWA, Life Technologies, Promega, Omega-Biotek, and others) and for different sample sources.  

STARHamilton has combined its expertise in automated liquid handling with LGC Genomics’ (formerly AGOWA) strength in magnetic bead technology to offer an automated and fully validated system consisting of Hamilton’s Microlab STAR and the LGC Genomics magnetic particle manipulators (sep™ box, formerly AGOWA box).
Using the combination of STAR, sep™ box and the mag™ midi DNA extraction kits, up to 2.5 μg of total DNA per sample can be extracted from blood using a validated, simple, reliable and fully automated procedure, with a throughput of 300 samples per shift.

STARRNA must be purified for many molecular biology experiments including PCR, gene expression profiling and RNA therapeutic research. Well-developed methods are currently available for the isolation and purification of RNA from a variety of sample types such as cells, tissues, serum, plasma and cell-free media.
Viral RNA is particularly challenging to isolate from these samples due to low titers, large initial sample volume requirements to obtain the desired yield and the complexity of the samples themselves. In some cases, the procedure must also be compatible with downstream processes such as PCR. When performed manually, these assays can suffer from inconsistent sample processing, clogging and large elution volumes.

Hamilton has developed an automated solution for RNA isolation from viruses using the Ambion MagMax Viral RNA Isolation Kit on the MICROLAB® STARlet Automated Liquid Handling Workstation.

STARHigh-quality plasmid DNA is critical for downstream applications such as Sanger sequencing, cloning, and transfection. DNA extraction from cultures can be time-consuming when done manually. Automating the extraction process can greatly improve throughput, decrease cross contamination, and decrease user variability. The Microlab® STAR, as shown in Figure 1, is a flexible, automated robotic pipetting system that can be adapted to perform various vacuum or magnetic bead-based tasks. The STARline platform uses air displacement technology, which increases pipetting accuracy and eliminates sample contamination and dilution. Omega Bio-tek offers high-quality, fast, and economical plasmid DNA extraction kits that can be integrated into the Hamilton liquid handlers. Omega Bio-tek offers a complete line of high-throughput plasmid DNA extractions kits that incorporate either silica or magnetic bead-based technologies that can be tailored to the individual needs of the customer. Typically, Omega Bio-tek kits produce 10-15 μg high-copy plasmid DNA from a 1 mL overnight culture, although yields will vary according to plasmid copy number, bacterial strain, and growth conditions.
