Core Biorepository Will Aid in Advancing Collaborative and Translational Research
Across the University’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center

Franklin, Mass. (February 9, 2021) – Hamilton Storage is pleased to confirm that the Hamilton BiOS® automated storage system will be installed as part of a shared biorepository for storing biological material at Emory University’s new Woodruff Health Sciences Center Health Sciences Research Building (HSRB)-II. This state-of-the-art biomedical research facility construction, including installation of the BiOS, is expected to be completed in Spring 2022.

A new biorespository core facility to oversee the operations of this new platform will be established and become part of the Emory Integrated Core Facilities. Michael E. Zwick, PhD, Associate Vice President for Research, Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center, Professor, Departments of Human Genetics and Pediatrics, and Associate Dean of Research, Emory University School of Medicine, leads the Emory Integrated Core Facilities, which provide access to trained staff and cutting-edge platforms for Emory investigators.

“HSRB-II will help Emory investigators tackle some of the most complex issues facing biomedical research and human health, and to do so, we need a high degree of confidence in the biological samples that our researchers rely on,” he notes. “The BiOS system provides a strong foundation of reliability, speed, and steadfast sample integrity to really drive these innovations towards impactful tools and actions. This is the first critical step towards a broader integrated strategy for effectively managing our critical biospecimens collected by our Woodruff Health Science Center investigators at Emory University.”

“Emory University School of Medicine is well known around the world for their medical and technological contributions, and we’re honored and proud that they selected our BiOS system to store and safeguard their precious samples,” adds Michael Girardi, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Hamilton Storage. “We look forward to supporting Emory with the BiOS implementation and beyond as it safeguards and speeds their future advances.”

At the HSRB-II, the BiOS will store more than 3.2 million valuable biological samples at a constant temperature of –80 ºC to prevent sample degradation even during individual tube selection and processing. The modular and scalable architecture of the BiOS provides flexibility for additional storage as the HSRB-II needs evolve, and the system accommodates a wide variety of labware types to enhance convenience.

A full audit trail of each sample and temperature log are maintained to ensure sample integrity, and permission-based controls prevent accidental or unauthorized sample access. Barcode reading is available in 1D and 2D formats to facilitate sample introduction, processing, tracking, and retrieval. BiOS will interface with the facility’s IT infrastructure and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for complete automation of sample management.
