Our Commitment

Hamilton is proud to have transitioned our entire line of automated storage systems to natural, green refrigerants. This advancement reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainable innovation—helping customers lower energy consumption, meet ESG objectives, and futureproof their operations. And with every system, you can count on the same trusted sample integrity and uncompromised performance.

Laboratories face mounting pressure to cut energy use, reduce emissions, and prepare for tightening global refrigerant regulations, even as they are among the most resource-intensive spaces in the world.

A typical lab can consume up to 10 times more energy per square foot than a standard office building, driven largely by specialized equipment and stringent temperature control requirements. Cold storage and ultra‑low temperature systems are central to that challenge.

Hamilton’s full transition to green refrigerants—including natural hydrocarbons such as propane (R‑290), ethane (R‑170), and carbon dioxide (R‑744)—addresses this issue head‑on. These refrigerants have zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and negligible global warming potential (GWP), providing measurable environmental benefits compared to traditional hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants. Natural refrigerants are widely recognized for their safety and efficiency in scientific applications.

Building What's Next

Businesses and individuals play important roles in environmental stewardship. Sustainability goes beyond turning off light switches and recycling cardboard. It encompasses smart HVAC utilization, responsible water consumption, green chemistry practices, waste reduction and recycling, sustainable procurement, digital data strategies, modular design, and transportation efficiency. It’s not just about saving energy or cutting waste—it’s a fundamental shift in mindset toward holistic, sustainable operations.

Sustainable labs save energy, reduce waste, and drive innovation. Greening your lab matters. And implementing sustainable actions in your lab will not compromise your scientific performance.

As the life science and biobanking industries strive to achieve net-zero goals, Hamilton's full line is now available with 100% green refrigerants, enabling labs to measurably reduce their environmental impact.

This month’s theme: A Greener Tomorrow

By the Numbers

Hamilton’s BiOS automated storage systems deliver a breakthrough in energy efficiency. By leveraging green refrigerants and advanced automation, we estimate our BiOS customer base has eliminated the need for 3,000 less-efficient manual freezers, saving approximately 52,000 kWh per day. By doing so, these systems enable biorepositories to use up to 75% less power compared with traditional manual freezer environments, dramatically reducing energy consumption and laboratory footprint.

This level of efficiency allows customers to cut operating costs, improve reliability, and future‑proof their facilities while maintaining full confidence in sample integrity and system performance.

Hamilton’s entire Verso line is now available with natural refrigerants. With this pivotal achievement, the systems now deliver up to 20% energy savings and offer a CO2 emissions equivalent savings of thousands of times less compared to those operating with traditional coolants.
