My research core uses high resolution respirometry to evaluate mitochondrial function across species and disease states for researchers at Pennington Biomedical Research Center and collaborating institutions in the United States. We use the oxygraph-2k system (Oroboros Instruments, Austria) to develop and carry out individualized substrate, uncoupler, inhibitor, titration protocols using Hamilton microsyringes exclusively.

At any given time my core has 6-10 undergraduate and graduate (masters and PhD level) trainees with the aim to receive formal training in real-time functional analysis of mitochondria. Currently, we have 1 set of syringes (came with the instrument) but have 4 instruments. As such, it is difficult to train multiple individuals at once. Furthermore, we dedicate syringes to particular substrates or reagents to avoid contamination. As such, over time as new protocols are incorporated the need for Hamilton syringes increases. Hamilton syringes are exclusively used in this application for their superior product durability and precision.

My core provides a unique experiments to students and trainees to contribute to funded research grants and projects with the potential to impact our understanding of the role and regulation of mitochondria across a multiplicity of biological systems and a myriad of diseases. It is my belief that such translational, quantitative approaches provide students with the "real-world" experience required for success in science. Furthermore, additional syringes will allow students to gain hands-on training with cutting edge technologies that would otherwise be inaccessible in a traditional academic environment.
