The Role of Haemoglobin and Haptoglobin in Neurological Injury After Subarachnoid Haemorrhage

My group investigates neurological injury after subarachnoid haemorrhage, with a focus on the role of haemoglobin and haptoglobin. We are running large-animal (porcine) studies that combine intrathecal administration, serial CSF sampling, and digital subtraction angiography. The translational aim is to generate proof-of-concept evidence for the safety and efficacy of haptoglobin, supporting progression to early-phase clinical trials in humans.

High-precision fluid handling is essential in every part of our protocol. Intrathecal dosing requires exact preparation and smooth plunger travel to avoid pressure artefacts during lumbar injection. Likewise, CSF sampling must be standardized across time points to ensure accurate concentration–time profiles, and consistent bolus delivery during angiography is key to improving vessel visualization and reducing variability in vasospasm measurements.

By incorporating Hamilton syringes, we expect meaningful improvements across precision, data quality, and workflow efficiency. The fine tolerances and smooth actuation will help deliver highly reproducible doses and sample volumes, reducing experimental variance and increasing confidence in our measurements. More consistent dosing and sampling will strengthen the statistical power of our studies without increasing animal numbers. Additionally, the robust construction and low dead volume of Hamilton syringes support sterile technique and streamline training for junior team members, making day-to-day procedures more efficient and reliable.

Together, these advantages will accelerate our evaluation of haptoglobin as a feasible intervention after subarachnoid haemorrhage and help us generate the high-quality evidence required for clinical translation.
