Hamilton’s oxidation reduction potential (ORP) sensors measure the net voltage potential of excess oxidizers or reducers in liquid. This is especially critical to prevent corrosion and contamination, gauge proper cleaning and sanitizing, and ensure chemical stability across markets like water treatment, municipal and industrial processes, food and beverage manufacturing, and even benchtop research. Our ORP probes offer minimal maintenance, long-lasting performance, and easy integration into your system.

What is the difference between ORP and Redox?

They are the same. Redox is a shortened word for “Reduction Potential”. ORP is shortened for “Oxidation Reduction Potential”. The sensor and measurement is the same.

What is ORP and why would I want to use it?

ORP is a measurement of the overall level of oxidizing or reducing substances present in the liquid. ORP is expresses as a millivolt (mV) signal. Positive voltage indicates an excess of oxidizing agents in the liquid. Conversely, negative voltage indicates an excess of reducing agents in the liquid. ORP is not specific to a single ion within the liquid but is often used to measure the status of a chemical reaction.

What is the effect of temperature on ORP?

Temperature compensation is a common requirement for accurate pH measurements, but not generally used for ORP. Why? pH is a measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration by the glass membrane. The voltage output of this glass membrane is temperature dependent, as is the hydrogen ion activity in the liquid. Temperature compensation will correct the pH voltage output back to a standardized 25°C. ORP differs from pH as it is not tied to a specific ion. The effects of temperature can be different depending on oxidizing and reducing substances present in the liquid. Due to this uncertainty, the ORP sensor output is uncompensated millivolts.
