Neonatal Screening

Neonatal screening allows to early treatment to prevent irreversible damage to newborns. Automation helps to cope with the millions of samples collected.

Neonatal screening is a public health service performed in many countries wordwide. Clinicians look for conditions that can lead to irreversible damages, but can be easily treated when known. Typically, whole blood is collected by a heel prick on a sampling filter paper card. This card is then dried and parts of the sample punched out for further analyses. Common tests include extraction of metabolites for mass spectrometry analysis and DNA for genetic tests.
