Key Differences between Optical and Polarographic Dissolved Oxygen Sensors 

Polarographic dissolved oxygen sensors rely on an electrochemical reaction that consumes oxygen and generates a current proportional to oxygen partial pressure, requiring polarization and an external transmitter. Optical dissolved oxygen sensors on the other hand, utilize fluorescence quenching, where the presence of oxygen alters the light emitted by a luminophore, with the measurement and signal processing often integrated within the sensor itself, eliminating the need for polarization and oxygen consumption.

Yes, atmospheric pressure directly impacts the partial pressure of oxygen in the measured air and is linearly proportional to the measured oxygen content.

Yes. Optical DO sensors can be used for monitoring oxygen contents in air as well as dissolved oxygen.

Do bubbles impact my DO measurement?

DO sensors should be installed away from spargers to minimize the impact of bubbles potentially causing an erratic signal. For ODO sensors, an H2 cap with a convex tip design can be used to mitigate bubble aggregation on the ODO cap.
