Precise dissolved oxygen measurement.

Hamilton’s VisiFerm optical dissolved oxygen sensors provide a significant advancement over traditional amperometric sensors, offering more robust measurements and minimal maintenance. Ideal for critical applications in biopharma and other hygienic industries, VisiFerm sensors eliminate issues like CO2 fouling and the need for electrolyte replacement. Process-related drift due to carbon dioxide and other acid gases is fully eliminated with optical technology. The VisiFerm family includes options like the VisiFerm mA and VisiFerm RS485-ECS, catering to various installation needs and communication protocols. Integrated intelligence with Arc technology enables features like reduced calibration frequency, enhanced diagnostics, and simplified troubleshooting. Explore our range of VisiFerm sensors, designed for reliable and accurate dissolved oxygen monitoring in your controlled environments. Hamilton also provides comprehensive support and resources, including our O2 Measurement Guide and a whitepaper on potential sources of optical dissolved oxygen measurement error and ways to mitigate their impact.

  • The sensors allowed us to improve the end product.

We have high quality standards and are convinced that Hamilton is able to meet them with its oxygen sensors. We use the oxygen sensors throughout the entire area of beer production and bottling. The sensors allowed us to improve the end product. Hamilton's support is excellent at all times.

Diagram showing luminophore excited by blue light emitting red light, quenched by O2 when present.

How does optical dissolved oxygen work?

The sensing element for an optical DO sensor is an oxygen sensitive luminophore. A blue light from the sensor excites the luminophore. When the excited molecule returns to its ground state it gives off red light. In the presence of oxygen some of the energy is transferred to the oxygen molecule. The oxygen measurement is made by comparing the excitation light (blue) to the emitted light (red).

Optical dissolved oxygen sensors fouling

Are optical sensors insensitive to CO2 fouling?

Over long fermentation runs, sensors are exposed to CO2 gas used for pH control or resulting from cellular respiration. The gas travels through the membrane of a polarographic sensor and changes the pH of the electrolyte. This change results in a lower nA reading.

A solution for every need

  • ODO Cap H3: Suitable  for most biopharmaceutical aqueous applications due to its better temperature stability, reduced calibration frequency, and longer cap life. With low drift and a short response time. As a default option for many applications, it is compatible with VisiFerm mA and VisiFerm RS485.
  • ODO Cap H4: Recommended for applications requiring the highest chemical resistance, as measurements are not influenced by lipophilic compounds. The convex design minimizes bubble formation.
While it shares the benefits of better temperature stability, reduced calibration frequency, low drift and longer cap life with ODO Cap H3, its response time is slightly longer.  This cap is compatible with VisiFerm mA and VisiFerm RS485.
  • ODO Cap H0: Suitable for applications requiring a short response time and compatibility with most fermentation and culture media. It offers a basic design with standard chemical resistance and temperature stability. It is  compatible with the VisiFerm RS485 and the legacy VisiFerm DO sensors
  • ODO Cap H2: Ideal for applications that need high chemical resistance and a hygienic design to simplify cleaning and minimize bubble formation. Suitable for chemically resistant applications where standard temperature stability is sufficient.
  • ODO Cap H2 FFKM: Same convex design and a PTFE membrane as the ODO Cap H2. Additionally, this cap comes with an FFKM seal making it suitable for aggressive applications.
  • ODO Cap L1: Optimized for trace measurements ranging from 0.8 to 2,000 ppb and shows stability against active chlorine and chlorine dioxide. Designed for a fast response time with measurements lower than 15 ppb, it serves as a replacement ODO Cap for VisiTrace mA and VisiTrace RS485
  • ODO Cap L0: Optimized for trace measurements ranging from 0.8 to 2,000 ppb and demonstrates stability against active chlorine and chlorine dioxide. It is designed as a replacement ODO Cap for the legacy VisiTrace DO Ex.
  • ODO Cap H20: The standard option for water applications. As an Optical Dissolved Oxygen sensor cap, it is compatible with the VisiWater DO P Arc.
