The integration of image analysis and automated liquid handling on the easyPick STAR Line makes identifying and picking bacterial colonies a breeze.
Rapid and Reliable Automated Colony Picking
The easyPick STAR Line automates colony picking as part of a broader automated workflow. This automated system [1] starts with your choice of a Microlab STAR or Microlab STARlet. Each option incorporates a high-resolution camera and light table to rapidly capture images of bacteria, yeast, fungi, and mammalian cells. Defined labware includes micro plates and Petri dishes up to 100 mm diameter. Images are analyzed using easyPick software based on user criteria like size, morphology, location, and proximity. Color mode further enhances colony selection, and the software may be fine-tuned to each user’s needs.
Precision Colony Sample Preparation
Once identified, the colonies are picked and transferred to a destination plate. Up to 400 colonies may be isolated per hour. Up to 8 independent CO-RE II pipette channels and other user-specified integrated tools aid downstream processes such as plasmid isolation, sample preparation for PCR and sequencing, and gel loading. All sample and meta information is stored and sent to an Integrated Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

Each user may easily set, prioritize, and change colony isolation criteria specific to their application needs.
Automated identification and isolation reduce the risk of cross-contamination from neighboring colonies and performance variability.
Samples are fully tracked through the automated workflow, including before and after images. All data may be sent to a LIMS.
