In R&D cell lines as well as bacteria and yeast strains are tested for their productivity of the target molecule. Plenty of bench-top bioreactors are used in parallel to generate the information in order to identify suitable lines or strains quickly.
Pilot and Upstream Production
With the help of animal cells, bacteria, yeast or algae the target molecules are formed during the upstream process. In the pilot phase the titer of the molecule is increased to very high levels. Therefore process conditions are optimized for the later production process.
Pilot and Downstream Production
Downstream processing is the most important procedure to isolate the target molecule efficiently and in high yields. Depending on the nature of the target molecule the process is optimized in the pilot phase to ensure a commercially successful production process.
