The Dencytee Arc uses two different optical methods: a transmitted light measurement and a reflection measurement. It is effectively a "transflectance" probe.

Transmitted light measurement is recommended for low densities of the medium, whereas reflection measurement is suitable for higher to very high densities.

Technically, the Dencytee Arc probe always measures both, regardless of the cell density. An output value for the cell density is calculated from the values of these measurements using a correlation. Depending on the cell density – the calculation is based on either the reflectance values or the transmittance values. The transition between reflection to transmission measurement is smooth.
