Proper priming of the syringe is critical to ensuring high precision and accuracy. When using a glass micropipette or a complex setup with tubing, the dead volume of the system often exceeds the volume of the syringe making traditional priming of the system impossible. It is for this reason that Hamilton suggests back filling the syringe with either buffer or mineral oil using the Priming Kit. The small gauge needle allows for insertion into all small volume Hamilton RN syringes and the septa seals against the back of the syringe to facilitate priming.
