Hamilton
guard columns protect your analytical HPLC column.
They remove particulate contaminants and highly
adsorptive compounds from samples, prolonging
analytical column life.
Guard
columns are modular and cartridge replacement
is easy and tool free. Guard column cartridge
holders are available in stainless steel and
PEEK materials. Both designs are optimized to
reduce dead volume and prevent extra column
band broadening.
Holders
for the cartridges are reusable indefinitely.
Technical specifications and an exploded drawing
are shown below for each type of guard column
and holder. As with all guard columns these
should be installed before the analytical column
and after the injection valve.

Selecting a
Guard Column Packing
Choose a
guard column cartridge with the same packing as your analytical HPLC Column.
Conditioning
The Guard Column
After
installing the guard column cartridge into the holder with the flow arrow
pointing toward the analytical column, pump approximately 2 mL of mobile phase
through the cartridge before connecting it to the analytical HPLC column.
Sealing the
Guard Cartridges
Both guard
cartridge holders are designed to seal with finger-tight force. If the guard
column leaks, loosen the holder and re-tighten. If the leak persists, remove the
cartridge and inspect the cartridge and holder for signs of damage or wear.
Replace any damaged or worn parts and reassemble.
