More Than Just a Microcarrier

Specialty protein coatings facilitate the attachment and expansion of cell types that are difficult or impossible to grow using traditional methods. Cells excrete nutrients into the alginate core where they remain biologically available, allowing the use of animal free media.



Why GEM?

The GEM is designed to maintain the unique in vivo phenotype of your preferred cell line while providing a vehicle for culture transport through the drug discovery process. The GEM substrate supports high-density cell culture in the BioLevitator. As a magnetic microcarrier, the GEM can be controlled during medium exchange and culture harvesting.

 

1. GEM Dissolves
  The GEM can be dissolved with Typsin EDTA

Cells Dissociate
Accutase (available from GCS) will dissociate the cells from the GEM while leaving the bead.

2. Magnetic Particles
  Enables pelleting of cells for media exchange

4. Alginate Core

  • Nutrients are available after media exchange
6. 75 – 150 µm Diameter
  Enables pipeting of GEM™ cultures

7. Non-Auto Fluorescent and Optically Clear
  Allowing for 3D projection imaging of cells directly on the GEM. The optical clarity of the GEM also allows for absorbance and luminescence assays with cells still attached.
