How is the BioLevitator an incubator?
The BioLevitator is a temperature and CO2 controlled environment in a sealed chamber.

Why is the BioLevitator not humidity controlled?
In traditional cell culture methods evaporation must be considered with placing flasks in an incubator. Due to the design of the LeviTube and the hydrophobic membrane in the LeviTube this eliminates the evaporation problem and hence we do not need humidity control for the BioLevitator.

How is cell culture different in the BioLevitator?
The BioLevitator is a stand alone instrument that has the ability to culture cells in a streamlined process. There are three main stages that cells go through when cultured in the BioLevitator. Those three phases are listed as follows:

  • Phase 1 - Inoculation
  • Phase 2 - Culture
  • Phase 3 - Harvest

The inoculation phase supports the loading of cells on the GEM substrate. Intermittent agitation is often used to enhance loading efficiency. The culture phase refers to the expansion of the culture. The optional harvesting stage is where the cells are dissociated from the GEM.

How do costs compare between BioLevitator cell culture and traditional methods?
Depending on the customer’s main goal the BioLevitator running cost savings may be as much as 62% per year.

Are the cells exposed to high shear forces?
In the BioLevitator the cells are not exposed to shearing forces like bioreactors and spinner flasks. The unique geometry of the LeviTube enables optimal homogenization while maintaining low shear forces.

Does the BioLevitator have the ability to connect to a network?
Yes, the BioLevitator has a fully integrated Ethernet port that can connect to a network.

Are there bigger cell culture tubes available?
The BioLevitator is designed to work with the 50 mL LeviTube™. At this time there is not a larger cell culture tube available.
